President’s Newsletter: November 2022
Dear BTS Member,
In this President’s message I should like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the 2023 BTS Annual Congress, to the new President’s Impact Award and to the BTS Specialty Sections.
2023 Annual Congress. The 2023 BTS Annual Congress will be held from Monday 17th to Wednesday 19th April 2023 at the Park Regis Hotel, Birmingham. As in previous years, the Monday morning will comprise the Continuing Education Programme, with the main meeting commencing in the afternoon. The program includes a plenary lecture on Toxicological aspects of nano- and micro-plastic particles; together with a number of symposia including Dose-Response relationships in chemical risk assessment – is there a new paradigm shift?; Nanotoxicology; Application of in vitro methods for mechanistic understanding and decision making and Ecotoxicology: Increasing use of cross-species extrapolation for decision making. In addition, the Annual Congress will also include various award lectures, the Study Directors’ Workshop, a Clinical Toxicology Workshop, roundtable discussions, short oral communications and poster presentations. The full draft program will soon be available on the BTS website. We will then open registration for the meeting and make a call for submission of abstracts.
One new feature for this coming year will be that sessions will be recorded and, as a new member benefit, will be made available to all BTS members who attend the meeting. As our current format often have two symposia running together, BTS members will now be able to attend one session and view the other session at a later date.
The BTS Scientific Subcommittee are currently looking into dates and venues for the 2024 and 2025 BTS Annual Congress meetings. As soon as these dates and venues are confirmed, they will be placed on the BTS website and I will include them in a future President’s message.
President’s Impact Award. This is a new BTS award and is described in detail under the Awards and Bursaries section of the BTS website (awards page). Suitable candidates will be BTS members who have made specific contributions with significant impact on, and/or benefit to, the Society over recent years. For this year nominations and self-nominations should be submitted to the BTS Secretariat by 1st January 2023. The winner will be invited to the 2023 Annual Congress and will receive a commemorative plaque. The BTS will cover meeting registration, accommodation and travel costs, as per our Travel Policy (https://www.thebts.org/information/policies-strategies/).
BTS Specialty Sections. I am pleased to announce that a new Speciality Section on Ecotoxicology has recently been established and will be chaired by Dr Natalie Burden. Details and forthcoming meetings of this new Speciality Section will be made available on the BTS website (https://www.thebts.org/join-the-bts/speciality-sections/).
I should like to inform you of a new joint workshop from the Mechanistic and Discovery Specialty Section and the Computational and In Silico Toxicology Specialty Section entitled: “Hands-on modelling of safety data for non-experts”. This has been scheduled for 29th November 2022 from 14:00 to 17:00 hours. More information can be found at: https://www.thebts.org/btsevents/
Finally, all the BTS Committees are here to serve the membership and we are always open to receiving your suggestions for any changes that can be made including topics for scientific meetings.
Brian
